How to reinvent yourself at 50 - a style interview with Pamela

When Pamela started having children and looking afterwards her family unit she forgot most herself. Her wake-upward call came when she saw a picture of herself at 50 and did non recognise that adult female. A lot has changed since then and through her weekly 'I Matter' entrada on her blog and other writings she is inspiring other women non to make that same mistake. Permit'south discover more than nigh her procedure of rediscovery and her unique fashion!

Can you tell united states a footling bit more well-nigh yourself?

I teach high schoolhouse journalism (for xv years)…am a professional blogger…a freelance writer (two monthly publications)…a mom of iii adults…a wife…and grandmother to two handsome boys! I live in San Antonio, TX and am a born and raised Texan!

Every bit a point of reference which age grouping exercise you belong to or peradventure you are willing to share your age?

I am now 61 years old! I practice consider myself to be in the over 50 group of wonderful Infant Boomers who are living longer than most generations earlier.

Can y'all tell us a bit more about your blog Over 50 feeling 40 and why yous created it?

I married at historic period 31 and began to have children later in life. Every bit I gained weight and became overwhelmed with parenting, I moved my personal care to the bottom of the priority listing. I had family members who began to speak very ugly to me about my appearance and this merely made it more difficult to stay positive. So, I merely gave upwardly taking care of Pam. When I had to renew my commuter's license at age 50, it was the picture which became an "Ah, Ha" moment in my life.

I looked at that woman and did not know her. Where had I gone? The loss of a few good friends around that same time had awakened me to the fact that LIFE IS SHORT. So, I began a personal makeover from the inside to the exterior and took my life back. I put depression and negative feelings in my past and decided to wear a smile and confidence every day. After v years, I began to share all I had learned with friends and my BFF at the time, Gail, said, You lot NEED TO Get-go A Weblog. That was right at five years agone…I started a blog over50feeling40 and been amazed at all that has happened since so.

Yous talk a lot about the I Matter campaign. Can you tell united states a little bit more near it and why this is so important to y'all?

Because of the story I just told you lot, I realized how many women are like I was at that fourth dimension…shut down and defeated. We all tend to put ourselves at the bottom of the priority list at certain times of our lives. Realizing I Thing and taking back my own life was empowering to me. I could do more than for others if I took intendance of myself and I was more than joyful. So, I MATTER day on my blog (now Thursdays) specifically celebrates this message in an endeavor to encourage those who need to become out of the doldrums and live over again. It is non a selfish message at all, only an of import one encouraging all of us to take care of ourselves in salubrious means. Looking and feeling our best really does release u.s. to do more.

I also hope I Affair volition attain to young mothers who may be letting go of themselves while they go through the childcare years. Yous practise not take to waste the time I did…learn it early!

pamela11

How have the changes you lot made in terms of appearance and self care changed yous?

So much has changed since I began to intendance for me. Once I started to apparel meliorate with the current torso I had, I was also able to finally lose weight. I could see the potential so and the want increased to wait and feel ameliorate. I had courage to starting time after in life and non give up. I started weight training right before I turned threescore and have kept information technology going. I started the Jenny Craig nutrition last summer and have before long lost 25 pounds. I became more confident that I could reinvent my career life at this age…and I have. I smiling more than…express mirth more…and enjoy each day to its fullest. It is funny, but during depressed times we actually focus more on ourselves. Breaking out, has been and then freeing. I enjoy others so much more at present. Information technology has made a huge departure in my life and my health. I am not afraid of my osteoporosis because I care for myself. I am not afraid of what turning threescore means to and then many…I am not old…I am enjoying life more right now than I always have!

How would you draw your ain style?

I like to say I am classic with a creative twist!

pamela7

What would you consider the almost of import components of your style?

I believe the nigh important word when developing personal style is COMMUNICATION. What are you lot communicating with the clothes you put on every day? I want to communicate that I am stiff, confident, in-accuse, joyful and creative. I try to have the time to ask myself in the mirror every day…am I communicating these five words.

Where do y'all live and how does that influence your style?

Living in South Texas ways that I am in a warm climate about of the year. I love winter clothes simply do not vesture them often so my investment in them is going to exist small. I try to wait for separates, more than than dresses, which will piece of work for multi-seasons. Also, San Antonio is a multi-cultural metropolis with a strong Hispanic majority, and then there is colour everywhere. I do believe it has fueled my love of colour.

pamela6

Do you feel you have a signature style?

I am not sure if I do…information technology is important to me that I know Pam-Mode. Correct now, at this moment I am more confident well-nigh my style than any other fourth dimension of my life. It takes fourth dimension to develop your style, but it is worth it to stick with the journeying. I have been known in the past as the Scarf lady at my school, but I have gravitated to other accessories at present and I always accessorize.

What inspires your outfit choices the most?

I read many blogs and magazines and I receive inspiration from others and proceed an inspiration file. I love neutrals every bit a base and will build around many neutral outfits. I e'er want to expect similar I am a CEO when I dress for work…yes, fifty-fifty working in a loftier school…you lot only never know what will happen or who you will see. Wearing apparel FOR THE Chore YOU Want is always in my listen.

When I go to Fashion Events, I like to examination the waters with more creativity. I never want to look like what many think sixty year olds look like…I do not want to be frumpy…or Cute. I want to be fabulous every day. I try my best to expect great when I run errands during not-work times…once again, you lot just never know who you will meet.

pamela5

Do y'all take things like color profiling or trunk type into account when y'all clothes?

I recall we all have to accept our best colors and our body type into account for the most flattering looks. I look my best in saturated, deep gem tone colors…so I wear those the almost. I am a curvy gal and so there are styles which will flatter my body the all-time and are slimming. I love an elongated wait also, and I use those tips. I really rarely wear heels any longer (aging feet) so I need other ways to elongate my way.

Exercise y'all believe in dressing 'age appropriately' and what does it mean to you?

I never think about my age when trying on wearing apparel. I think about my adjectives and what I am communicating. I am careful with prints, lace, and peculiarly florals, because they especially will make me feel older with some designs. It is up to each private woman what they deem appropriate. I do not article of clothing mini-skirts considering they are not good for my trunk type. I know some over 50 women who wear them well. Women over twoscore should not store in inferior departments because of fit and quality…not considering they are for kids. Bottom line: What practice y'all want to say with your dress? Who do you want to attract? What exercise you desire to accomplish? Those are the questions…not how quondam should I exist to article of clothing this or cease wearing this?

pamela4

Would you say that at this stage of your life you are now more, or less interested in way, fashion and the style you look?

Well, I loved fashion in my 20s and early 30s…then I went through my years of struggle with who I was …now, I am dorsum. I love fashion…its creativity and fun. Fashion and fashion are transformative and empowering for women…that is what is important at my time of life. I want to experience the joy each and every moment. I really am having the nearly fun now…because this stage of life comes with lessons learned, liberty, and actually less stress.

Way and manner are transformative and empowering for women…that is what is important at my time of life.

Why is the way yous look important to y'all?

I show respect for myself with how I look. When I run across a healthy, well styled adult female in the mirror, I accept the confidence to go out and tackle annihilation. I am not trying to expect younger…I want to await adept every day and exude joy. The best accompaniment nosotros wear is a smile.

Which of the outfits on your blog are personal favorites and why?

Tough question equally this changes daily simply hither are a few favorites.

  • The oriental jacket – such a great fit and a good case of trying things on even if it is out of your normal style or comfort zone) I was featured in the local newspaper in this outfit considering our Manner Writer saw me and wanted to have feature me in a Street Style Column he does.
  • The leopard jacket. I love this jacket and I love these pants! (These pants stand for a victory…when I started this weblog five years ago I was v sizes larger!!)
  • This black outfit – represents what I wear often. I love black and do vesture it oftentimes…now fifty-fifty in warmer atmospheric condition.

Do you lot follow trends? And if yes, which trends excite you lot at the moment?

I apply trends as inspiration and guidelines to mix up my look and have fun with manner. I am not going to purchase something just considering it is on tendency, but at my age, you see trends come up and become a lot. This spring at that place are many colors called Spice Market colors, and Marsala (color of the year) which are deeper, richer colors with brown foundations and these are MY colors. I love them and will wear them during the warm weather this year and be on trend. I also love all of the longer jackets and dusters around this year and some of the boho-prints which I can practise on a small basis but not in an overall expect.

Do yous have any mode and style tips for women over 40?

I write these tips every day, every calendar week…I have and then many. My re-occurring themes are:

  • Decide v adjectives you wish to communicate with your way and stick to them…that fashion over time you develop a strong message and a personal style.
  • Always effort clothes on and take fourth dimension to shop. Mistakes are frequently fabricated with quick decisions.
  • Less is more. Practice not pile on the accessories or heavy prints.
  • You practise not have to spend a lot…in that location are great pieces at every price point. Take time to store.
  • Wear what makes yous feel groovy…wear apparel which cause you to walk into every room with your head held high.

What are your plans for your blog and how practise you run across it develop over the coming years?

I just returned from the first national blogging briefing just for mid-life bloggers, Chosen BAM. I am energized and ready to brainstorm video and write a book soon. Over the years? Certain, I would love to be the Betty White of bloggers and practise this for the next 30 years. We will see…anything is possible.
